What do you do with your plastic shopping bags after emptying them of groceries? Do you throw away your plastic drinking straws? Are old newspapers only useful for cleaning glass? What about magazine paper? After opening, how do you use metal cans? Have you ever thought that old clothes can become new fabrics?
Join us for a day of discovering these different recycling methods. We will learn how to conserve our precious air, water, and soil and protect our environment from industrial waste.
We will learn about Palestinian cities from When You Visit My City, Dalia Taha’s Arabic-language children’s poetry book. The poems and drawings will bring us to life, past and present, and inspire us through their shapes and symbols to create a large city out of magazine paper to be hung as a mural.
We will use newspapers to make a kite that will take us to Gaza; plastic drinking straws from Ramallah juices to make a boat that will take us to Haifa’s sea; Nablus shopping bags will be turned into schoolwork folders; old raggedy clothes will be turned into a fabric cover for your favourite notebook, inspired by the colours of the famous Jenin watermelon.; cans of chickpeas (hummus), fava beans (ful), pickled vegetables, and soft drinks will become a scarecrow to be placed among Hebron’s grapevines and Ramadan lanterns that will light the way to Jerusalem’s Damascus Gate (Bab al-Amoud).
