This seminar sheds light on the economic and social relationships between Palestinian coastal cities and different Mediterranean cities and countries. Between the mid-19th century and its fall in the Nakba, the Ottoman Tanzimat (reforms) made the city of Yaffa a thriving economic and social centre, with a great economic, and social impact on the city. Yaffa became a centre of commerce tied to European markets. A vital Mediterranean city, it attracted immigrants from other Palestinian cities as well as from Lebanon, Egypt, and Syria.

The seminar will include a discussion of an initiative launched at Birzeit University in the 1990s, which resulted in the establishment of a Center for Mediterranean Studies. Speakers will then address the Jaffa, Heart of the Mediterranean section, and the interactive map within the A People by the Sea exhibition
