We are pleased to invite you to the launch of the book Resurgent Nahda, which documents the Arab exhibitions held in Jerusalem during the British Mandate in 1933 and 1934. The book highlights Jerusalem's role as a center for cultural, economic, and artistic exchange and its vital contribution to establishing a regional Arab Nahda following the geopolitical transformations after World War I.
This book is the result of seven years of intensive research by Nadi Abusaada, based on his 2019 article published in Jerusalem Quarterly, issued by the Institute for Palestine Studies, as well as two exhibitions he curated at the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center in Ramallah (2022–2023) and Darat al-Funun in Amman (2024). The book includes six essays, an interview, and a rich collection of archival documents, artworks, and crafts from collections worldwide.
The book traces the connections between Jerusalem and cities such as Baghdad, Cairo, Damascus, and Beirut, following the paths of artists, craftsmen, architects, and journalists, revealing a pivotal chapter in modern Arab history that shaped Palestine’s cultural identity and strengthened knowledge exchange in the region.
The launch event will include a discussion of the book, as well as a presentation of works by pioneering Palestinian artists and craftsmen who participated in these exhibitions, offering a unique opportunity to explore the cultural and creative heritage documented in the book.
