The Palestinian Museum, in partnership with the A. M. Qattan Foundation, opened In Search of Remnant Images, part of the multifaceted project Elegiac Whispers. Curated by Amin Alsaden, the exhibition brings together moving image works by ten artists from Palestine and the Arab world, engaging with questions of loss, memory, and absence.
The exhibition asks how video art, or the moving image, can capture grief. How do artists represent loss when what must be depicted is absence itself: the void left behind by people, places, and collective experiences? It also explores the role a durational medium can play in narrating disappearance, and in summoning traces of what is no longer present.
While each work emerges from a specific subject and context, the works take up everyday intimacy, poetry and memory, as well as objects, communal inheritance, visual evidence and monuments. Together, they may be understood as a collective search for what remains after loss: images, traces and memories that resist disappearance and erasure.
The selection features works by Basma al-Sharif, Dena al-Adeeb, Huda Takriti, Hussein Nassereddine, Maha Maamoun, Noor Abuarafeh, Rund Alarabi, Sadik Kwaish Alfraji, Yaqeen Yamani, and Younes Ben Slimane.
The Palestinian Museum is a non-governmental association dedicated to supporting an open and vibrant Palestinian culture locally and internationally. The Museum presents and contributes to narratives on Palestinian history, culture and society from new and critical perspectives. One of Palestine’s most significant contemporary cultural projects, it also provides spaces for creative ventures, educational programmes and innovative research.
