Between Arabic Calligraphy and Poetry: An Art Workshop Inspired by the Works of Mona Saudi and the Poetry of Mahmoud Darwish

with artist and architect Khalil Abu Arafeh

Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, 15–17 February, from 10:00
Location: the Palestinian Museum

The Palestinian Museum invites emerging artists and art students to take part in an art workshop inspired by the poetry of Mahmoud Darwish and the work of artist Mona Saudi, as part of the Museum’s partnership in the exhibition The Dice Player, currently on view at Dar Al Hikma, Sharjah.

The workshop explores the relationship between poetry, Arabic calligraphy, and visual art through close readings and analysis of selected poems by Mahmoud Darwish, alongside a study of Mona Saudi’s artistic practice. Participants will also engage in practical sessions in calligraphy and watercolour, as well as creative discussions on the interaction between poetic text and visual practice. Each participant will develop an individual artwork inspired by the poet’s and the artist’s work.

The workshop will take place over three days, from 15 to 17 February, at the Palestinian Museum, from 10:00 until the afternoon, and will conclude with a small exhibition of participants’ works at a later date.

Participants are encouraged to reflect in advance on their favourite verses from Mahmoud Darwish’s poetry. Places are limited; please register by completing the application form. The Palestinian Museum will contact the artists who are selected.
