Pirates, museums, and other colonial fictions
With Amer Shomali, artist and director of the Palestinian Museum
Friday 13 November 2026
Location: Mucem, Marseille, France
Language: English
Join a conversation with Amer Shomali about rethinking museum practice amid the ongoing genocide. The destruction and looting of cultural heritage, alongside displacement and the fragmentation of communities, have challenged conventional ways of safeguarding and exhibiting collections, calling for new approaches beyond traditional museum structures.
Drawing on the Palestinian Museum’s experience, Shomali explores how museums can counter colonial narratives and give communities a greater say in how their cultural heritage is safeguarded and shared. The conversation also asks how cultural institutions might rethink their role in times of crisis, and what they owe the communities they serve.
