Location: The Palestinian Museum and via Zoom

Naji al-Ali’s life and works remain in Palestinians’ hearts and on their minds, his legacy still strong in the 37 years since his martyrdom. al-Ali’s drawings, which expressed thoughts and emotions related to displacement, exile, revolution, resistance, and enmity, contend with the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.
We will get to know artist and critic Naji al-Ali more intimately through a discussion of the use of caricature and comics in Palestinian art. Towards this end, the writer Khaled Fakih will converse with Palestinian comic artists Khaled Jarada and Mohammad Sabaaneh.
Naji Salim Hussain al-Ali, c. 1937-August 29th 1987, was a Palestinian cartoonist, distinguished by his scathing awareness-raising criticism for which his 40,000 drawings are renowned. He is considered one of the most significant Palestinian artists who worked to pioneer political change using art. In 1987, al-Ali was assassinated by a still-unknown perpetrator in London.
Mohammad Sabaaneh, born in Kuwait in 1979, is a Palestinian cartoonist from Jenin. He is famous for his anti-Israeli occupation cartoons that tell the story of the suffering of Palestinians in the occupation prisons. He is an academic and lecturer at the Arab American University Department of Media and Communication. His cartoons are usually published in local Palestinian and international newspapers.
Khaled Jarada is a Palestinian artist born in 1996. Since a young age, he has been known in the Gaza Strip for his eye-catching dynamic artworks, quickly carving out a place for himself in the art world. He holds a BA in Multimedia from the University of Palestine, which helped him develop his skills and move towards digital drawing. His artistic interests focus on contemporary humanitarian and psychological issues, and he has participated in many local and international art exhibitions.
Khaled Fakih is a Palestinian media personality with several publications specialising in Naji al-Ali's caricatures. He is currently working on his doctoral thesis on image, imagination, and visual skills. Since 2005, he has been working as a lecturer and professor of media at several Palestinian universities.
