From the Earth: Clay Art Workshop Inspired by the Work of Sliman Mansour

In partnership with Gallery 301, Bethlehem
Tuesday, September 9, 10:00 – 13:00
Location: Aida Youth Center – Aida Camp

During the First Intifada, 39 years ago, four artists—Sliman Mansour, Vera Tamari, Nabil Anani, and Tayseer Barakat—founded the New Visions group. The group’s central idea was to boycott Israeli products and to experiment with materials drawn from the land and nature of Palestine. They worked with clay, flowers, henna, leather, wood, and fire, until each developed a personal language and tools of artistic expression for Palestine.

Since then, boycott has remained an act of freedom. How does the Palestinian artist boycott Israeli products? And how does he create his art using local materials?

Join us in a unique workshop inspired by the work of Sliman Mansour, where we will explore how boycott becomes an act of creativity, and experiment with new materials and techniques for working with clay.

What will we do on this day?

  • Discover clay and its possibilities.
  • Learn the steps needed to produce an artwork, including how to choose our subject.
  • Learn how to prepare clay and how long it takes to be ready for use.
  • Experiment with natural dyes for coloring, such as the Galilee’s indigo (Neila) used by Sliman Mansour.
  • Finally, create an artwork inspired by the practice of Sliman Mansour.
