White Rumi thobe

White Rumi thobe
Ethnographic collection / Dresses
Date made Circa 1920 - 1930

A white Rumi thobe (dress) from the Ramallah area made of handmade natural linen fabric and embroidered with the Fallahi (peasant) cross stitch made with predominately red silk threads. The chest panel of the thobe is embroidered with geometric, plant, and animal shapes, among them the rooster motif as seen in the middle. This rooster motif carries religious significance for Christians. The sleeves bear several plant stitch patterns to their ends, with the rooster motif in the middle. The front and back panels of the thobe are embroidered with 6 different plant stitch patterns, 4 of which are identical from front to back and surrounded on both sides by the feather stitch pattern. The sides (al-Banayiq) are embroidered with two plant stitch patterns of differing designs. The lower end/tail area (al-Dhiyal) is adorned with complex tatreez (embroidery) made up of geometric shapes.
