Job Title: Collections Unit Coordinator
Department: Curatorial and Collections
Report to: The Head of the Collection Unit
Job Scope: Collections’ registration, preservation, cataloguing, documentation, maintenance, storage, and ensuring their integrity inside and outside the Palestinian Museum.
Main Responsibilities and Tasks:
Under the direct supervision and coordination of the Head of the Collections Unit. The Coordinator shall adhere to the museum’s strategy and all approved procedures and policies, in a manner that supports the realization of its vision and mission in producing new narratives about the Palestinian history, culture and society. That is through the art, cultural and educational exhibitions and programmes as well as supporting creative projects and research papers. Accordingly, the coordinator of the Collection Unit shall do the following tasks:
- Support the Head of the Collections Unit with all the tasks regarding the collections, especially those related to the exhibitions;
- Coordinate process of receiving, delivery, loaning, retrieval; including transportation, loading, packing and packaging, along with the duly documentation in accordance with the established protocols and procedures followed at the museum;
- Register, Archive and classify collections and input data in the Palestinian Museum’s data system;
- Preserve museum collections of all kinds if owned by the Museum or borrowed, duly and according to the standards followed at the Palestinian Museum;
- Monitor items in warehouses of collections and showrooms to ensure their integrity;
- Assist in conservation labs management, coordinate for various courses and contact with collections’ owners and museums in that regard;
- Offer help to the curator in charge of projects and exhibitions within the Museum’s Public Art Programme and under the supervision of the curator;
- Contribute in searching and preparing the required materials to support the various activities and exhibitions inside and outside the Museum;
- Write texts of museum collections to prepare them for all visual and written materials produced by the Museum including the website;
- Coordinate with shipping, clearance and insurance companies and suppliers of maintenance and conservation materials as well as build a private database in collaboration with the financial and administration departments;
- Write periodic reports related to collections;
- Execute any other related tasks assigned by the Head of the Collections Unit.
Scope of Authority and Supervision:
- Direct Subordinates: None.
- Internal Relations: Team of the Curatorial and Collections Department, Production and Public Programmes Department, internal and external curators, researchers and archivists.
- External Relations: Research institutions, cultural centres, museums, and collections’ owners.
Job Requirements:
- Academic Qualifications and Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in: Museum Studies, Anthropology, History, Arts, or any related field;
- Minimum 3 years of work experience in the field of registration and classification of collections;
- Experience in the setup and dismantling of art and museum exhibitions;
- Experience in the processes of transporting and shipping museum items and artworks and dealing with the internal and external shipping companies.
- Skills and Abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of collections management and methodologies;
- Familiarity with types and categories of collections and their characteristics;
- Ability to organize and classify data and information effectively;
- Fluency in both Arabic and English; spoken and written.
